Inspired by a board officer’s vision, the SEASPAR Aktion Club in Downers Grove, Illinois, U.S., created a special Little Free Library in 2024. This initiative reflects the club’s focus on community through collaboration and supports one of Kiwanis International’s partner organizations, Little Free Library.
The project began as a passion of Aktion Club Former President Adam Sikora, who had dreamed for years of building a Little Free Library. Unbeknownst to him, Eric Alwin, president of the Woodridge Kiwanis Club and a skilled carpenter, was already crafting a Little Free Library in his garage. The design — a replica of the TARDIS from the British science-fiction television series “Doctor Who” — was brought to life through Alwin’s creativity and craftsmanship. In the show, the TARDIS is a hybrid spaceship and time machine designed to look like a British police-call box.
Once Alwin completed the structure, SEASPAR Aktion Club members painted it, adding their own flair. The library was installed at the Lisle Park District in Lisle, Illinois, and celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The collaborative effort of a Kiwanis club, Aktion Club members and the local park district has become a fixture in the community.
“It’s well-loved,” says Bethany Pastrana, SEASPAR’s inclusion manager and Aktion Club faculty advisor. “Every time I visit, it’s full of new books.”
