The motto of Bradenton, Florida, U.S. — “A better way of life, a better Bradenton” — was fulfilled when the Bradenton Kiwanis Aktion Club and the Manatee River Kiwanis Club teamed up for a meaningful project in May: celebrating nurses during Nurse Appreciation Month.

The Aktion Club collected 100 goodie-filled bags that were delivered to nurses in over 40 schools, as well as the Westminster Assisted Living Center in Manatee County. The bags contained items such as gift cards, lip gloss and pens.

Chad Cohen, a former Key Club member and current Manatee River Kiwanian, suggested the collaboration. Cohen and Sharon Barhorst, co-advisor of the Bradenton Kiwanis Aktion Club, felt nurses are often overlooked and wanted to acknowledge their work.

“The nurses were stunned and so grateful,” says Barhorst. “It was wonderful to see their reactions.”

In addition to the gifts, Aktion Club members colored thank-you cards for each nurse, adding a personal touch to the project.

“We’re fortunate to live in such a positive, supportive community,” adds Barhorst.
